Fumigation
Fumigation represents one of several treatment techniques commonly used by pest management professionals.
The chemical used here, a “fumigant”, such as methyl bromide, hydrogen phosphide and hydrogen cyanide , is applied into an enclosed, air-tight space. With sufficient concentration and time, the net result is to destroy an insect, all its life stages, or a larger pest e.g. rat.
The described fumigants are highly toxic to all living organism. Correct procedures practised by the trained fumigator ensure that the fumigant does not pose any health risk to humans and animals. Skill and judgment is also needed to ensure that while a fumigation can be successful, it does not damage the treated items.
In Singapore, the fumigation business is highly regulated. The activities of fumigators are governed by bodies such as the National Environment Agency (NEA), the Agri-food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) and the Ministry of Manpower (MOM).
