Most landed homes today are designed with lifestyle concepts incorporating botanical and green sanctuary features to enhance the overall aesthetics of the homes. Unique or exquisite plants may be specially imported or landscape is fitted with grass carpet to spruce up the outdoor atmosphere. While these décor are luxuriously stunning, they are usually investment heavy and dependent on regular landscaping and diligent maintenance.

However, you may wonder despite engaging adequate landscaping services and nurturing the plants by giving it sufficient hydration and minerals, these plants and flowers, actually wither, turned yellowish, curled up or have presence of damaged spots. This is because there are bugs out in the garden that actually damage your greens!

Bugs that chew off your plants

We all heard about Caterpillars and know it is in the larval stage before turning into moths and butterflies. They actually feed on leaves resulting in your plants losing or dropping the leaves, leaving just the veins behind.

Tip: Keep a lookout for presence of eggs under the leaves and remove them to prevent hatching process from taking place.

Bugs that is attracted to plant saps

Despite watering your plants regularly, they end up turning yellow, possess brown patches, falling off or start to curl up. This is because pest such as Aphid, Mealy Bugs or Spider Mites utilize their mouth sucking parts to feed on saps. Mealy bugs may spread from plant to plant, as the nymphs relocate themselves after being hatched.

Tip: Make sure your plants are healthy to prevent victims of mealybug infestation, and prune off any infested or damaged-looking leaves.

In fact, bugs such as Aphid may attract ants to your home as well, because they secrete sticky sweet fluid that drips. Learn more about ants in Singapore homes.

Bugs get comfortable in shady damp spots

We often notice slugs or snails hiding along rocks, foundations or mulched gardens. They feed on both living and dead plants and are usually active at night. As they are attracted to cool and moist areas, you may consider keeping parts of garden dry and water the plants adequately, and prevent excess drips and puddles, which are also culprits in attracting other pests, such as breeding mosquitoes.

Tip: Remove any clutter, piles, weeds or debris in your garden to prevent space hiding and harborage opportunities. Adopting diligent housekeeping also helps to prevent possible infestation of rats or attracting snakes in your garden.
